Role summary:
The Overnight News Editor role is a unique opportunity that would suit a journalist who is looking for their first job on a digital newsdesk at a national news outlet. The Overnight News Editor will be passionate about making GB News a destination website for high-quality, breaking news and agenda-setting exclusives, have a keen eye for typos and editorial style, and will be a versatile individual who is able to adapt depending on the priorities of GB News and the news agenda. They will oversee a small, but dedicated team of reporters and be responsible for ensuring there is staffing between the hours of 11pm to 7am across a seven-day rota. An excellent knowledge of media law and a strong understanding of the brand and our values is required.
Key responsibilities and main tasks:
- Editing and Proofreading
- Responsible for maintaining standards across GBNews.com between 11pm and 7am, ensuring the homepage reflects the biggest stories and those most of interest to our readers and viewers.
- Proofread content to identify errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling before publication.
- Craft compelling headlines and associated SEO for all stories published.
- Collaboration:
- Working cross-platform and liaising with the wider business, including TV, as part of the “One GBN” strategy.
- Assisting linear staff with written copy, video and graphics when required to become a truly multimedia journalist.
- Managing a team of reporters:
- Commissioning stories and exclusive content, reacting to breaking news and co-ordinating forward-planning.
- Responsible for overseeing rotas, ensuring adequate staffing between 11pm and 7am across seven days a week.
- Encouraging personal development of reporters, helping them to develop their journalistic skills and championing their successes.
- Reporting and writing:
- Leading from the front by producing brilliant copy on a daily basis for news stories and features.
- Writing clear, concise, and engaging articles on a variety of topics, adhering to the GB News Editorial Charter.
- Utilising Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to help boost the depth and breadth of GB News’s journalism.
- Use video, both original and sourced, to enhance storytelling and drive engagement
- Analytics:
- Monitoring analytics to keep track of real time website performance.
- Relentless in using website and YouTube data to identify new trends and opportunities.
- Self-critical with the ability to rapidly review the performance of stories post-publication to adapt and learn.
- Professional Development:
- Receive mentorship and guidance from the wider web team and TV newsdesk to support career development.
- Take on additional responsibilities and projects as required to broaden skill set and professional experience.
