Recruitment Request Assistant Editor, Breakfast
GB News is looking for an experienced Assistant Editor to join GB News Breakfast, our live morning news and current affairs programme broadcast from London Paddington.
The show sets the UK news agenda each morning, delivering breaking news, political analysis, and lively debate, anchored by star presenters Eamonn Holmes, Anne Diamond, Stephen Dixon, and Ellie Costello.
As Assistant Editor, you will help shape the show’s editorial direction, oversee content for accuracy and balance, and ensure a dynamic, engaging broadcast. This is not a 9–5 role: you’ll stay across the news agenda beyond office hours and react quickly as stories develop to keep the programme sharp and agenda-setting.
This is an exciting chance to influence the day’s political and news agenda, delivering major UK, US, and global stories with pace, authority, and impact.
Key Responsibilities:
Support the Editor in the editorial planning and production of The Breakfast Show, ensuring the programme is relevant, timely, and distinctive.
Lead the daily editorial meetings and guide a team of producers, researchers, and reporters to develop compelling content and segments.
Write and edit scripts, headlines, and in-show graphics with clarity and flair, ensuring editorial accuracy and tone.
React swiftly to breaking news and major developments from the gallery with the team outside to deliver informed coverage
Collaborate with on-air talent to shape government interviews, debates, and the paper review.
Work closely with their fellow Assistant Editor in a strong, collaborative partnership to help shape and strengthen the wider team, demonstrating a team-first mindset that prioritises the success of the programme.
Oversee the integration of live reports, guest interviews, and video packages into the show’s rundown.
Proven ability to shape the programme’s stories with impact, backed by a strong contacts book to secure guests for the show.
Ensure adherence to GB News editorial standards, legal and compliance frameworks, and broadcasting regulations
Deputise for the Editor when required.
Requirements:
Proven experience in a senior editorial role within a live news or current affairs broadcast environment, ideally on a breakfast or daytime programme.
Deep understanding of UK news, politics, and culture, with the ability to set and interpret the news agenda for a morning audience.
A strong understanding of global affairs, with the ability to explain clearly and confidently how international events impact Britain and its audience.
Strong editorial judgement with a proven ability to shape clear, compelling journalism under tight deadlines.
Excellent scriptwriting and sub-editing skills, with a sharp eye for accuracy, tone, and legal compliance.
Confidence handling breaking news and rapidly developing stories from the gallery.
Experience working closely with studio production team, directors, technical crews, and on-air talent during live broadcasts.
Strong leadership and people-management skills, with the ability to support, motivate, and develop junior staff.
Flexibility to work early mornings, occasional extended hours, and weekends as required by the news agenda.
Desirable:
Solid knowledge of Ofcom guidelines and media law, ensuring all content meets regulatory and legal standards
A versatile journalist with a broad understanding of politics, sport, and entertainment
Energetic, positive, and motivating personality, able to keep the team engaged and focused during early-morning broadcasts.
Confident and tactful in managing challenging on-air talent.
