Job Purpose
The Broadcast Engineer is responsible for maintaining the reliability, performance, and continuity of GB News' broadcast infrastructure, ensuring the successful delivery of live and recorded content across television, radio and digital platforms.
The role provides technical support for a wide range of broadcast, production, and associated technology systems, responding rapidly to operational issues, diagnosing faults and implementing effective solutions to minimise disruption to on-air output. The Broadcast Engineer acts as a key technical resource within the Engineering team, supporting both day-to-day operations and engineering projects.
Working closely with operational teams, stakeholders and external vendors, the Broadcast Engineer contributes to the maintenance, development, and improvement of technical workflows and systems. The role also supports the implementation of infrastructure upgrades, technology deployments, and engineering projects, ensuring new systems are delivered successfully and transitioned into operational service.
Operating within a dynamic 24/7 broadcast environment, the Broadcast Engineer is expected to demonstrate strong technical skills, a proactive approach to problem-solving, effective communication, and a commitment to continuous learning and service improvement.
Key Accountabilities
Ensure the continuous operation of broadcast and production systems, maintaining uninterrupted on-air services.
Provide timely technical support to operational teams, resolving faults and minimising disruption to broadcasts.
Monitor, diagnose, and troubleshoot hardware, software, network and broadcast system issues in real time.
Perform routine inspections, preventative maintenance and system health checks to maximise reliability and performance.
Support live productions, outside broadcasts and special events, ensuring all technical requirements are met.
Work closely with operational teams to investigate, resolve and document technical incidents.
Support engineering projects, infrastructure upgrades, system migrations and technology deployments.
Assist with system testing, commissioning, implementation and operational handover activities.
Collaborate with internal teams, stakeholders and third-party vendors to resolve technical challenges and improve workflows.
Maintain accurate records of incidents, support requests, equipment configurations and technical resolutions.
Develop and update technical documentation, operating procedures and knowledge resources.
Identify opportunities for system improvements, operational efficiencies and service enhancements.
Participate in shift-based and on-call support arrangements within a 24/7 operational environment.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
Experience supporting and troubleshooting broadcast, media, production, or IT systems within a live operational environment.
Strong technical knowledge of broadcast workflows, signal paths and production technologies.
Experience diagnosing and resolving hardware, software, network and systems issues under time pressure.
Understanding of IP networking principles and their application within broadcast environments.
Experience supporting live productions and operational broadcast services.
Ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail.
Experience providing technical support to operational users and non-technical stakeholders.
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a proactive approach to issue resolution.
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Experience maintaining accurate technical documentation and support records.
Ability to support project implementation, testing, and operational transition activities.
Willingness and ability to work within a 24/7 shift-based operation, including participation in on-call support arrangements.

Desirable Criteria
Previous experience within a television, news, media or broadcast environment.
Knowledge of broadcast automation, playout, contribution, distribution, newsroom and studio systems.
Familiarity with cloud-based and virtualised broadcast technologies.
Experience supporting live outside broadcasts and remote productions.
Knowledge of audio, video, encoding, streaming and transmission technologies.
Experience with system monitoring tools, observability platforms and incident management processes.
Understanding of cybersecurity principles within broadcast and media environments.
Experience participating in engineering projects, upgrades, system implementations or technology deployments.
Relevant technical qualifications, certifications, or degree in Broadcast Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
Knowledge of industry standards and best practices relevant to broadcast operations.
